My Favorite Kitchen Accessories
Since I’m a big fan of googling “stuff every home chef needs”, I figured I’d make my own list for anyone else out there interested. These are some things I cannot live without and use very often. Enjoy.
- My cast-iron skillet- This is an awesome tool to have in the kitchen. They’re great for achieving a nice golden color on chicken, pork, steak or potatoes. They’re also great for making frittatas and Dutch babies. They do require seasoning and upkeep. You cannot put them in the dishwasher and I have never used soap on mine so as not to wash away the seasoning. I do a very lazy version of seasoning where I clean out the pan with a paper towel and if there’s still food particles left behind I scrub it with kosher salt and rinse it a few times. Then I spray it with canola oil and rub it into the pan with a paper towel. Technically you’re supposed to heat it again after that to seal in the seasoning but…I rarely do :/…my pan is still amazing though, so to each his own! Lol
-My OrginizEat App- this app has been my recipe book for over a year now. I use it literally every day to save recipes I see online and want to try, or I can enter my own into it. It’s great because I can look back and see what recipes I used for previous holidays and the notes that I took on them. They let you organize your recipes in folders, so I have a folder for my sons birthday which I refer back to each year and see what I did and what I might want to do again!
-Pizza Stone- My BFF for life got me this for my wedding and I’ve used it at least once a week ever since. It gives pizza or bread the best crust eva.
-Sil pats- these are so much easier than parchment and save me lots of time and money. If you’ve never seen them, they’re basically non stick mats you can bake on.
-Rolling mat-I got one of these because my counter never seems spotless enough to knead dough on and my cutting board would slide around everywhere when I kneaded dough. This allows me to knead my dough on a clean surface without it sliding around. It’s also great for measuring pie dough or cookies. The one I bought is here.
-Microplane- these are great for grating ginger, garlic, or zesting fruit. I use it all the time.
-Mortar and Pestle- Whole spices last longer and have a more pronounced flavor, so I like to buy most of my spices whole and smash them up in the mortar and pestle. It’s also a great tool for a toddler to help with! My son Jack loves crushing spices in it.
- Sheet pans- I have a variety of sizes but quarter sized sheet pans are especially useful. They are smaller and allow you to roast the right amount of veggies without getting a big sheet pan dirty. They’re also great if you wanna be super chefy and have your “mise en place” available at the ready.
